The molding is the original picture rail molding that was used to hang paintings/decorations from it in lieu of hanging items on a plaster wall.

The large vent in the hallway has a switch that turns on and opens the ceiling vent. These vents were an old form of cooling for the house, by venting cool air below the foundation, and venting the hot air up & out. An access panel has been placed under the floor vent, for access and security. (This feature no longer serves a cooling purpose).
